Healthy Weight Loss: How to Shed The Pounds The Green Way

When the term “green” or “eco-friendly” is talked about, a lot of people immediately think about construction. After all, the built environment is one industry which contributes significantly to greenhouse gases, and there seems to be a lot of pressure to change this.

One industry which isn’t really talked about in this regard is health, or specifically, weight loss.

However, if you put your mind to things, there are most certainly ways to lose weight in an eco-friendly way. Through today’s post, we will take a look at these in-detail.

Try a meat-free diet

meat-free diet

Before some of you start to worry, you don’t necessarily have to turn vegetarian to reduce the amount of meat you consume. When we say meat-free, this really can apply to just one day per week (after all, this is how the Meatless Monday campaign started).

Why should you decide to get rid of meat? Put simply, this is something that can wreak havoc with your carbon footprint. Aside from the environmental impact, let’s not forget that meat can contribute to the likes of heart disease, diabetes and cancer – meaning that it’s a pretty serious issue. If you were to delve into studies specifically related to weight loss, it has been found that less meat consumption can prevent people piling on the pounds.

You will of course have to adapt your diet accordingly, and still ensure that sufficient amounts of protein enter your diet. This might mean turning to the likes of beans and eggs more often.

The natural power of sleep

power of sleep

In some ways, the environment is always going to be at least a little affected by the food you consume. One way in which you can boost your general health without touching the environment is through shut-eye.

It has been found that a person getting six hours of sleep per night is 25% more likely to be obese. Considering the fact that you will also be awake less, one could even argue that sleep actually helps the environment!

Give the boot to bottled water

bottled water

We don’t need to provide a speech on how invaluable water is to your overall health. Hydration, as we all know, is paramount to a healthy human body.

From a weight loss perspective, a lot of people feel as though they are hungry when in actual fact they are just craving more hydration.

Then, if we turn to the topic of bottled water, let’s not forget that this is one of the biggest offenders when it comes to recycling (or a lack of it). Furthermore, plastic water bottles contain the dreaded BPA – which has been found by countless sources to be a really damaging chemical to the body.

Grow your own food

Grow your own food

For those that have the time, don’t underestimate the power of growing your own food. Or, if time is a commodity that you can’t afford, at least turn to local sources.

Unfortunately, while most of us like to eat healthily and fully understand the weight loss benefits of fruits and vegetables, they tend to compromise a lot of green principles. They tend to be imported from all over the world, meaning that they carry a huge carbon footprint.

Suffice to say, when you grow your own food this footprint is eliminated. For those of you looking towards the local option, try and shop at a local farmer’s market.

Make use of a compost

Make use of a compost

It’s one of the oldest tricks in the book, but in a bid to live a greener life whilst still tapping into healthy living a compost should be at the top of your shopping list. Food scraps all add to your general trash bag, which in turn will end in a landfill.

Avoid the above approach by investing in a compost. Bacteria and microorganisms will break the food down, with the end result being fertilizer. You can even revert to the previous point we made at this stage, and then use said fertilizer to grow your own fruits and vegetables!

Pay attention to where your seafood comes from

where seafoods come

Seafood is a pretty big deal from a health perspective. It contains plenty of protein (which helps build muscle and also keeps you fuller for longer), whilst also being a healthy dose of omega-3 fatty acids. While some experts will suggest that you banish meat from your diet, the same most certainly isn’t preached about fish.

Unfortunately, there are right and wrong ways to consume fish. If you purchase your fish from some of the less trustworthy sources, you might find that it is contaminated with chemicals like methylmercury. This is obviously harmful to the environment, but also not great for the human body. It means that you need to buy seafood that is only caught in eco-friendly ways. The packaging will help you out here; marketing departments love to list the sustainable benefits of fish on their packaging wherever possible!

Go back to basics with your exercise

Sometimes, it’s all about going back to basics with your exercise regime. As we all know, carbon emissions are a big problem right now – and this is something that your car knows all about.

It means that in a bid to combine your eco-friendly and weight loss principles, you should be looking to walk or cycle wherever possible. Suffice to say, both your body, environment and even your wallet are going to benefit immensely from such an approach.

Create a healthy diet plan that has been proven to work

healthy diet plan

The last point we are going to talk about is going to go into the most detail, and it’s for a very good reason. A diet plan really can help you plan how to live in an eco-friendly and lean manner. As you can see from all of the above points we have talked about, sometimes it’s just about setting rules and sticking by them.

Of course, deciding which rules work from both a weight loss and eco-friendly perspective can be tricky – and this is why we are presenting a couple of so-called third-party options. There are diet plans out there that can be implemented immediately, with Probody and di.et being a couple of them.
